Dear XX,

I have seen your recent article on… / leaflet on… / website and am writing to enquire as to why there is no mention of following a vegetarian or vegan diet as a solution to climate change.

Following the report on livestock published in November 2006 by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (Livestock’s Long Shadow –Environmental Issues and Options), the connection between the raising and consumption of livestock and the changes to our climate has become clear. The livestock sector generates more greenhouse gas emissions as measured in CO2 equivalent – 18 percent – than transport, and is also a major source of land and water degradation.

Surely then, encouraging people to reduce or eliminate their meat and dairy consumption is a crucial solution to the problems you highlight in your article / leaflet / website? I am interested to know why you do not state this important and obvious measure as a way for your readers / supporters to make a positive contribution towards the elimination of the threat of global warming.

I enclose a copy of the European Vegetarian Union’s brochure on the ecological consequences of meat consumption, and look forward to your response on this issue.

Yours sincerely / faithfully

XX
