Vegetarianism in Germany

Vegetarianism in Germany has a long and colourful history. Since the foundation of the first vegetarian society in 1867, it has been formed in many different ways following the ups and downs of the political and social circumstances. There has been no continuous development from the beginning up to now,  rather a plurality of  trends, movements, groups and societies. Many  personalities with distinctive characteristics  determined the developments of the societies and groups, often together but sometimes against each other.

Above all  the influence of the Lebensreformbewegung at the end of the 19. and beginning of the 20. century has to be mentioned. Its decisive impulses were of great importance for the development of vegetarianism in Germay. In some spheres you can notice it even today.

Today vegetarianism is an established element of the society.
