The EVU 1999 Congress < previous - next >

Greetings from Marcel Hebbelinck

President of the European Vegetarian Union

Dear Participants and Honoured Guests,

It is my pleasure and privilege to extend, on behalf of the Council of The European Vegetarian Union, a ver y hearty welcome to the participants of the Seventh European Vegetarian Congress. The number, range and quality of lectures and workshops is a striking tribute, not only to the reputation that the European Vegetarian Union has esta blished over the past years, but also to the personal contribution and endeavours of our honorary Secretary-General and her small group of collaborators, in and beyond the town of Widnau, who made this event possible. The present gathering promises to be one of the most exciting events in the history of EVU and I am sure that you will join me in giving our best to make this congress a success.

In the 14 years since the EVU was founded, interest in vegetarianism has continued to grow, both in the scientific world and among the general public. The potential health benefits of vegetarian diets render them of particular interest at a time when health-oriented lifestyle practices, such as exercise and meditation, are receiving increased attention.

In addition, in recent years considerable attention has been directed to ecological and environmental conditions, some of which may be negatively or positively affected by dietary practices. The economic and environmental costs of sustaining an ever-growing population on animal food, have made vegetarianism look an essential element in the search for the survival of our planet.

At the same time, the interest in vegetarianism has been encouraged by spiritual, moral and social concerns too. Exposure to Eastern philosophies has persuaded us that what Pythagoras said a long time ago was right: eating flesh must be abandoned to attain spiritual harmony and inner peace. Of course, it is not just a matter of cause and effect but it certainly may contribute to the achievement of higher spiritual goals. The ill treatment of animals and the endangerment of whole species has intensified people’s disgust with human exploitation of other animals and of “Mother Earth” at large.

These are a few considerations which underline the importance of a vegetarian lif estyle. During this congress in Widnau, the many presentations and workshops, as well as the social gather ings, will undoubtedly amplify your theoretical and practical knowledge in this area and give you an opportunity to have meaningful discussions and deliberations.

I wholeheartedly wish you all a pleasant and memorable congress.
