Reading the EVU we see that many of us are constantly reasoning on how to lead more and more people to become vegetarians. I graduated in medicine in December 1981 and since then I have been working in this field trying to bring people to understand the reasons they became ill, (eating food of animal origin is one of them) and then helping them to remove the roots of their sufferings through their own efforts rather than simply prescribing drugs or surgery.

First of all it is necessary to think what moves us to try to do so, to help people to become vegetarians, and then, necessarily we must take a close look at ourselves. So, what do we see? People that are born, receive food, sometimes good, sometimes not so. Some receive love, others not. Some receive more while others receive less and others even less. Time goes by, we mature and decay until finally we die due to sickness, violence or age. In the meantime we give love to ourselves and to others as well or we take destructive action towards ourselves or against others. Some of the so called first world nations still simply kill their criminals instead of facing and solving the reasons such nations create robbers, rapists and murderers. I see these nations afraid to see their own intentions, their own way of life, they fear to see the lack of respect they have for others and for themselves. What a mess human life has been!

Some of us discover somewhere within our own hearts that besides the truth of very disgusting aspects of life, despite the fact we are going to die someway, we prefer to help others to overcome their sufferings instead of looking for the pleasures of life our western civilisations offers us. So, I think that if we want to help others to become vegetarians we should search more deeply for the reasons why we feel it is more advantageous, why we get more pleasure when we try to help others instead of simply keep looking for fun.

Despite the tremendous possibilities of material comfort the peoples of the western developed countries have access to, there is a lot of suffering and standards of living do not show the truth at all. Children still suffer violence at home. Child abuse is a fact all over the world. Our jobs do not seek for life quality but stupid ego promotion or money and then the market is invaded by junk foods and other related products. Animal life is ignored as well the lives of our own descendants. If we, humans, commit all this violence against ourselves, against our own children, then what are we are doing to mother nature?

It is well known by psychologists that children who received love will give love to themselves and children who were hated will give hatred to themselves as well as to others. Such grown up children thinking that to be mistreated means to make their parents happy and then they mistreat themselves smoking, drinking alcohol, taking drugs, eating meat. 'Mummy used to give me meat...' Then, when we are not happy we do all this. On other occasions when we feel guilt because we are happy, then we try to destroy our own happiness due to unconscious motivation. So, I think many times we commit the mistake of acting destructively against ourselves thinking it will be good for us. Due to these facts I think if we want to help people to become vegetarians, to respect animal life, our first attitude should be to create a better life for ourselves.

We should help ourselves and other vegetarians to live better and better creating a very strong world community of high standards for quality of life. Now comes a question: How can I help myself and others? My answer is we need to direct our attention. Generally our attention disappears when we look at ourselves and we see anything related to our past unhealed sufferings. The same happens when we see anybody else and something of him or her leads us to our past. Instantaneously we stop paying attention and we immediately start to say stupid things. Sometimes we simply leave them to themselves. To increase our capabilities to see, to hear, to understand ourselves and others is the first step I see to help others to become vegetarians. People incapable of seeing the amount of sufferings they are producing to animals, to humans and to themselves as well when they hunt, when they buy meat or fish, are people with immense need for attention.

Their hearts and minds are closed and they live like destructive robots without feelings, cold people. The only way is to warm up their hearts with love, care and tons of patience and skill because they will not understand us. In fact they will think we are stupid and not dependable people.

On the other hand there are immense possibilities to help people since we dedicate our lives to study and reflection. From the Far East we get meditation instructions, knowledge on chakras, food, herbs, exercises for mind and body as well as acupuncture. In the eastern countries vegetarian scientific knowledge flourishes, psychoanalyst, Dr. Wilhelm Reich, a disciple of Dr. Sigmund Freud, realised his patients have bodies!!! Which opened new horizons to our understanding and proper care of ourselves - in his book 'Character Analysis' he gave us tools to make us understand what we lost due to emotional traumas, how we suffered or we did not develop due to faults of our education system. Also, there are other tools capable of helping people in other ways beyond the scope of this medical doctor.
