Vegetarian Reward"Out of Africa" - Book by Parkson Edjeketa, Nigeriafrom European Vegetarian, Issue 1/2000 |
A couple of years ago I was contacted by the missionary of the 'Norway Vegetarian Fellowship', Parkson Edjeketa, who wrote full of enthusiasm from Norway that he had decided to go home to his motherland Nigeria in order to convey the vegetarian idea to his fellow citizens. There was at once a mutual understanding between us. Following this, there was a somehow regular communication, on my part sending Parkson the EVU News and giving some advice and him writing some odd letter where he reported about his activities. With the EVU Congress coming up Parkson wished to launch his book 'Vegetarian Reward' which he had written in the meantime. It was agreed to have a nice little ceremony where Parkson could not only present his little book to the public but together with another representative from Nigeria, report about the situation in their country. It was not meant to be. The bureaucratic difficulties were insurmountable and despite eager contacts with either consulates till the last moment before the congress Parkson was not granted a visa and it was impossible for him to come to Widnau. A delegation from the Nigerian Embassy in Bern had accepted the invitation though and attended the EVU Congress on three days. It is useless to say how disappointed Parkson was, especially regarding the prevention of the launch of his book 'Vegetarian Reward'. It had taken a lot of effort to have it printed and those who have an idea of the conditions in Nigeria can measure what an achievement this means. The book gives a considerable amount of information, spread over 170 pages, about the reasons why to go vegetarian and the 'rewards' of such a decision. As it is written by an African Christian missionary the religious base is of course evident in all chapters. Parkson succeeded in putting together the knowledge of certain celebrities like Micheal Klaper, Neal Barnard, John Robbins, Carl Anders Skriver and several pastors and bishops of The Brotherhood of the Cross and Star. In his book you will read a lot of things which might be surprising or perhaps not be completely acceptable to everyone, and yet it is interesting to read as it opens many new dimensions and might initiate the reader to reflect.
