Birth of a Hippo

Hippo is a name that stands for 'Help International Plant Protein Organisation'.

from European Vegetarian, Issue 1/2000

Hippo is a charity registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales. It was born out of its founders' experience of living in Ethiopia. Whilst working there on an irrigation project they became totally convinced that a widespread move towards meat-less or less-meat diets is the only way of halting and reversing the process of desertification which threatens much of sub-Saharian Africa. The dual keys to change are awareness education and the availability of good alternative protein foods, unfortunately neither Governments nor Non-Government Organisations are doing much to help; usually quite the opposite.

The function of Hippo is to encourage and facilitate the use of plant protein foods instead of animal foods. It helps poor communities to produce their own food and to be self- sufficient. The importance of these aims will be readily understood by those who know how wasteful it is to use land and water resources to keep lifestock when people could eat plant food direct. To use only or mainly plant proteins makes sound sense ecologically and is also kinder to animals, but HIPPO is just as keen to emphasise the potential health, hygiene and economic benefits for the people who adopt such a life-style.

HIPPO is yet just a baby but already it has strong links with individuals and organisations in several African countries. busy providing advice and assistance in the production and supply of foods, especially soya foods (Non-GMO of course!) for some of the poorest people in the world.

HIPPO will be delighted to send further information to potential supporters:
